Standard Gen 3: the mid-range option

The Gen 3 Standard is the most common Starlink dish in RV setups. It received FCC approval for in-motion use in May 2024. At $299–$499, it balances performance and cost. The Standby Mode change

If you previously used Standby Mode ($5/month) to keep your dish active between trips, be aware that it no longer supports in-motion use. Attempting to use Starlink while moving on Standby Mode triggers a "Starlink Disabled while moving" alert. You must activate a Roam plan before hitting the road.

Which plan for in-motion?

For occasional road days between campgrounds, the Roam 10 GB plan at $10/month covers navigation, music streaming, and light browsing. A full day of driving uses roughly 2–5 GB depending on activity.

In-motion use demands a secure, permanent mount. The dish cannot shift, rattle, or blow off at highway speeds. There are three proven approaches.

Roof mount

A roof mount is the cleanest installation. The dish sits above the roofline with a completely unobstructed sky view in every direction. Most RV roofs can support the weight of any Starlink dish — even the 10 lb Flat HP is lighter than a typical RV air conditioner.

Power options

Option 1: Inverter from house batteries Run a pure sine wave inverter from your 12V house battery system. The alternator replenishes the batteries while driving. This is the most common approach and works for all three dishes.

What causes dropouts

  • Bridges and overpasses: 1–3 second interruption as you pass under. Recovers automatically.

Constant disconnections at highway speed
