Every off-grid Starlink discussion eventually reaches the same question, and almost nobody answers it with real numbers: what does the whole thing actually cost?
This guide prices three complete builds — parts list, total, and honestly where each one stops working. The dish itself is $249 for a Mini or $349 for a Standard Gen 3, plus a Roam plan at $55, $80, or $175 per month. Everything below is the power system that keeps it running.
Start from the load
Everything in a power system is sized from one number: how many watt-hours per day you need.

Build 1: Weekender — $600 to $900
For: Mini, occasional boondocking, shore power every few nights.

Nothing to install, nothing to wire. Plug the dish into the station, put the panel in the sun, done.
Where it stops working: 768Wh is roughly a day of Mini use with no margin. Two cloudy days in a row and you are out. It will not run a Standard Gen 3 for a full day at all. This is a weekend system that assumes you plug back in.
Build 2: Wired system — $1,800 to $2,600
For: Standard Gen 3 or Mini, week-plus boondocking, running indefinitely in reasonable sun.

Check price on AmazonThis is the build that actually solves the problem for most people. 2,560Wh covers a Standard Gen 3 dish overnight with capacity to spare, 400W of solar replaces roughly what the dish consumes in a day of good sun, and the DC-DC charger means travel days are also charging days.

The component people skip and then wonder why they arrive at camp half-empty. An alternator will not properly charge LiFePO4 on its own.
Where it stops working: sustained overcast, or parking under trees for a week. 400W of solar produces very little on a dark December day at northern latitudes.
Build 3: Full-time — $4,000 to $6,000
For: living in the rig, working online, extended boondocking, running a fridge and an office.

Check price on AmazonA 12V compressor fridge belongs in the power budget, not outside it. It cycles rather than running continuously and draws from the same bank as the dish, so it must be sized in from the start rather than added later.
Where it stops working: genuinely nothing short of a week of heavy overcast. At this level you have enough storage to ride out bad weather and enough solar to refill quickly when it clears.
The power station shortcut
Every build above assumes wiring. If you would rather not, a large power station replaces the battery, inverter, and charger in one box.

The honest trade-off. Compare cost per watt-hour:

They are closer than most people assume at this capacity — the wired bank pulls ahead as you scale past 4,000Wh, and the station wins outright on installation time and portability. Below about 2,000Wh the station is clearly cheaper; above about 5,000Wh the wired bank clearly is.
The real deciding factors are not cost per watt-hour but these: a station takes floor space and can be stolen; a wired bank disappears into the rig and cannot. A station moves to a friend's cabin; a wired bank does not. Pick on that basis, because the money is close.
Solar sizing, briefly
The rule: roughly double your daily consumption in watts of panel.

The doubling covers three real losses: MPPT conversion (5%), panel derating from heat and angle (20–30%), and the fact that "a day of sun" means four to six productive hours, not twelve.

Costs people forget
- Lithium-capable converter. Many RV converters charge to a lead-acid profile and will never fill a LiFePO4 bank past ~80%. Budget $200–$400 to replace, or buy an inverter charger that handles it.
- Cable and fuses. Easy to underestimate at $150–$600 depending on system size. 2/0 cable is not cheap and you cannot substitute thinner.
- Battery monitor. Around $200 for a shunt-based monitor. Without one you are guessing at state of charge, which is how banks get over-discharged.
- Install labour. $500–$1,200 if you are not doing it yourself. High-current DC wiring is the part of an RV build most worth paying for.
- The dish and the plan. $249–$349 hardware, plus $55–$175 monthly. The power system is only part of the total.
What to do next
- Pick your dish first. The Mini halves every downstream cost. Only choose the Standard if you genuinely need it.
- Add up your real daily watt-hours — dish, router, booster, fridge, laptop.
- Match a build above to that number and how long you go between hookups.
- Decide station vs wired on installation appetite and security, not on cost per watt-hour — they are close.
- Do not skip the DC-DC charger if the rig moves regularly.
- Get a quote for install before assuming DIY, especially for anything above 2,000W.
